Robinia wood flower box—natural, durable, and well-designed.

The Urbanature planter is made of solid, knot-free black locust wood. Black locust is one of the most durable European wood species and is particularly well-suited for long-term use on balconies, patios, or in gardens.
Unlike many conventional wooden planters, the moist potting soil does not come into direct contact with the wood. The included planter insert separates the soil from the wooden frame. At the same time, the wooden bottom is open, allowing excess water to drain away and the structure to dry more effectively. This reduces persistent moisture inside the planter. With a length of 87 cm, the planter is suitable for flowers, kitchen herbs, strawberries, lettuce, and compact vegetable plants. The interior dimensions are designed to accommodate standard plant inserts approximately 80 cm long. The handcrafted construction is reinforced with sturdy corner joints, wooden dowels, and a stainless steel clamp that runs around the entire perimeter. This ensures the planter retains its shape even as the solid wood naturally expands and contracts with changing weather conditions.

Your benefits at a glance:

  • Durable black locust wood for outdoor use
  • An open soil structure reduces waterlogging and moisture
  • A plant insert separates the soil from the wood
  • Handcrafted, dimensionally stable, and versatile

The planter is available in three designs:

87-cm Flower Box
For a windowsill, patio, balcony floor, or a suitable balcony mount.

Freestanding planter with 1 planter
Freestanding design on four legs for balconies, patios, and gardens.

Stacked planter with 2 planters
Two planting levels in a compact design—ideal for a variety of herbs, flowers, or edible plants.

When left untreated, black locust wood develops a natural silver-gray patina over time when used outdoors. This visual change does not affect the wood’s durability.

Real wood for the balcony—without the drawbacks of traditional wooden planters.

A flower box made of real wood has a warm, natural and high-quality look. However, it is precisely the combination of damp soil, regular watering and changing weather conditions that poses a problem for many traditional wooden boxes: if moisture remains trapped inside the box for long periods, or if the potting soil is in direct contact with the wood, the material struggles to dry out. This can lead to warping, swollen components or premature damage. The robinia wood planter from Urbanature solves this problem through its design. Not by using a completely enclosed wooden box, but by clearly separating the plants, soil and wooden frame.

Do not place damp potting compost directly against the wood.

The plants are housed in a separate plant insert. This ensures that the damp growing medium does not come into direct contact with the inner surfaces of the black locust wood. The solid wooden body forms the high-quality outer casing, whilst the insert holds the soil and the plants. The base of the wooden planter has also been deliberately left open. Excess water from watering and rain can drain away downwards, rather than collecting permanently within the wooden structure. At the same time, air reaches the underside, helping the wood to dry out. In this way, the planter combines the natural appeal of solid wood with a design tailored to the specific requirements of a planter.

Black locust wood for long-term outdoor use.

Black locust wood is one of the most durable native or European timber species. It has a high natural durability and can be used outdoors even without a coat of paint. Urbanature uses carefully selected, knot-free black locust wood with a smooth surface. The solid wood gives the window box its high-quality appearance and sets it apart from thin-walled plastic boxes or simple, screw-assembled wooden boxes.

Over time, the surface changes due to exposure to the sun, rain and the elements. The wood, which was originally warm in colour, develops a natural silver-grey patina. This process is typical of untreated wood and does not adversely affect its functionality. If you wish to preserve the wood’s original colour for longer, you can treat the surface regularly with a suitable outdoor maintenance oil.

Traditional joinery instead of simple box construction.

The planter is not only made from high-quality materials, but is also structurally designed for durability. Precise timber joints, additional wooden dowels and weather-resistant adhesive bonding stabilise the body. A stainless steel clamp running all the way round provides additional support for the structure. It absorbs the forces that can arise when solid timber expands and contracts due to moisture and temperature fluctuations. The visible metal component is deliberately incorporated as part of the functional, durable design. The result is not an ordinary wooden planter, but a handcrafted planter designed, right down to the smallest detail, for long-term outdoor use.

Three designs for balconies, patios and gardens.

The classic version can be used on a sufficiently wide windowsill, on the patio floor or in conjunction with a suitable balcony bracket. The balcony bracket must be selected separately and must be capable of supporting the weight of the fully planted planter.

For freestanding use, the flower box is also available as a freestanding planter with a single box. Four wooden legs raise the planter to a comfortable height, making a windowsill or balcony railing unnecessary. This version is particularly suitable for patios, courtyards and larger balconies. The multi-tiered planter with two boxes makes additional use of the vertical space. Two planting levels create more space for flowers, herbs or small vegetable plants without significantly increasing the floor space required. Different plant species can be clearly separated whilst still being presented as a single arrangement. The freestanding versions are therefore not traditional deep raised beds, but rather raised planters on a sturdy wooden frame. They combine the planting depth of a window box with the convenience and space-saving benefits of a freestanding structure.

Conventional Flower Box or Urbanature Flower Box?

Feature Conventional Flower Box Urbanature Robinia Wood Flower Box

Material Often made from plastic, thin wood or coated wood-based materials. Solid, knot-free robinia wood for permanent outdoor use.

Contact with Potting Soil Damp soil often comes into direct contact with the wood. Liners do not reliably drain irrigation water, resulting in contact between wood and water. A separate planter insert separates the damp soil from the wooden body. No wooden base, but a plastic tray instead.

Water Drainage A closed base can make it more difficult for the wooden structure to dry out. The open wooden base allows excess water to drain away and supports ventilation.

Dimensional Stability Simple screw connections can be affected by moisture and weathering. Strong wood joints, wooden dowels and a continuous stainless-steel bracket reinforce the body.

Design Often has a functional plastic appearance or a simple crate-like design. Natural solid-wood appearance with a clean, high-quality design.

Use Usually designed for windowsills or balcony railings. Available as a classic flower box, freestanding planter or tiered planter.

Planting Depending on its size, suitable for flowers and individual herbs. Plenty of space for flowers, culinary herbs, strawberries, salads and compact vegetable plants.

Manufacturing Often industrially manufactured. Handcrafted in Germany.

Frequently asked questions about robinia wood planters

Can I fill the window box straight away with soil?

The plants are placed in the plant insert supplied (bubble wrap + base tray). This prevents the damp potting compost from coming into direct contact with the black locust wood. The wooden frame remains better ventilated and can dry out more quickly after rain or watering.

How does the window box prevent waterlogging?

The wooden frame has an open base. Excess water from watering and rain can drain away downwards, rather than collecting permanently inside the wooden structure. The separate plant insert also keeps soil and moisture away from the wood.

Is the plant insert included in the scope of delivery?

Yes. The appropriate plant insert and the dimpled plastic sheeting intended for this design are included in the delivery. The planter can therefore be planted in straight away. Please note that a proper drainage layer is essential.

Can the window box stay outside all year round?

Yes. Black locust wood is naturally very durable and is particularly suitable for long-term outdoor use. Placing it in a dry and well-ventilated location further enhances its longevity.

Does black locust wood need to be treated regularly?

No treatment is required to ensure the wood’s long-term durability. Over time, untreated black locust wood develops a natural silver-grey patina as a result of exposure to the sun and the elements. If you wish to preserve the warm colour of the wood for longer, you can treat it regularly with a suitable outdoor oil.

Why does the colour of the wood change?

Greying is a natural process that occurs in untreated timber. Exposure to UV radiation and the elements causes the surface to change, taking on a silvery-grey colour. This visual change has virtually no effect on the stability or durability of black locust timber.

Which plants are suitable for a window box?

This window box is suitable for balcony flowers, bee-friendly flowering plants, kitchen herbs, strawberries, leaf lettuces and compact vegetable plants. When choosing plants, you should take into account the light conditions at the specific location.

Can the window box be attached to a balcony railing?

The window box can be used with a suitable balcony bracket that is strong enough to support its weight. The bracket must be compatible with the railing, the dimensions of the box and the weight of the fully planted window box.

How heavy is the window box when it’s planted?

The empty window box weighs around 6 kg. The total weight depends on the soil used, the plants and the amount of water it holds. When mounting it on a balcony railing, you must therefore always take the load-bearing capacity of the bracket into account.

What distinguishes a window box from a traditional wooden box?

With many conventional wooden planters fitted with a liner, excess water does not drain out completely. It seeps between the liner and the wooden base. In the Urbanature planter, the growing medium is separated from the wooden body by a separate planting insert. The open base also aids water drainage and ventilation of the wooden structure.

What versions are available?

The window box is available in a classic low design, as a freestanding planter with a single box, and as a tiered planter with two boxes. The freestanding versions are particularly suitable for patios, balconies and gardens without a suitable window sill or parapet.

Is a freestanding planter a raised bed?

The freestanding version raises the planter to a more comfortable working height, but has the same planting depth as a traditional window box. For this reason, the terms ‘free-standing planter’ or ‘tiered planter’ are more accurate than the term ‘raised bed’.

Can I use a different plant pot?

The internal dimensions are designed to accommodate a plant insert approximately 80 cm long. A different insert may be used, provided its dimensions fit the wooden frame and reliable water drainage is ensured.

Is water dripping out of the window box?

Due to the design, excess water may drain downwards. If there is a window sill, a delicate floor or a balcony below, you should therefore check whether suitable protection against water run-off is required.

Is the window box delivered fully assembled?

The classic window box is supplied fully assembled. For the freestanding versions, the frame is assembled using the assembly materials provided.
