The new foldable balcony raised garden bed for deep-rooted plants.

Urbanature’s foldable raised bed brings real gardening to balconies and patios – even where space is limited and light conditions aren’t always ideal. The vertically arranged planters create space for herbs, vegetables, strawberries, flowers or young plants without cluttering up the balcony.

What makes it special is the V-shaped box design developed by Urbanature. Whilst many vertical gardens are enclosed on several sides due to their construction and therefore cast shadows on themselves, the Urbanature raised bed opens up to the light. The slim cross-sections of the timber or aluminium structure also allow more daylight to reach the plants – a crucial advantage on balconies, where railings, walls or overhangs often block out some of the sun.

This creates a vertical raised bed that not only saves space but also actively promotes plant growth. After all, alongside water, soil and nutrients, light is one of the most important factors for healthy plants.

Available in durable black locust wood or anodised aluminium, this raised bed combines high-quality materials with well-thought-out functionality. The 8-litre planters offer sufficient space for healthy root growth; depending on the model, an integrated water reservoir helps ensure a steady supply of water to the plants. With the matching propagation dome, the raised bed also doubles as a small cold frame for growing your own plants.

At the end of the season, the raised bed can be folded away to save space. For anyone who wants to garden to a high standard, flexibly and with visible results, even in a small space.

A space-saving raised bed for people who want to make the most of their gardening, even in a small space.
Urbanature’s foldable raised bed brings vegetables, herbs, flowers and young plants to places where traditional raised beds simply won’t fit: on the balcony, on the terrace, in the conservatory or even in bright indoor spaces. The planters are arranged vertically, making use of the height rather than valuable living space.

Whether made from European black locust wood or anodised aluminium, this raised balcony planter is not a short-lived seasonal item, but a durable planting system for discerning urban gardeners.

The balcony raised bed for urban gardening.

Traditional raised beds require a lot of soil and a lot of space. On balconies, that is often precisely the problem. Urbanature is therefore rethinking urban gardening and has developed the foldable raised bed: compact, vertical and flexible.

The planters are stacked on top of one another, creating several planting levels within a very small footprint. This results in a fully-fledged raised balcony bed for herbs, lettuces, strawberries, vegetables, flowering plants or mixed plantings – without heavy wooden boxes, without large volumes of soil and without a bulky structure.

The raised bed is freestanding, can be folded away at the end of the season and stored to save space. Ideal for anyone who wants to plant their balcony in summer and make flexible use of it again in winter.

Optional with self-watering system.

Can be used as a small cold frame with the growing hood.

If you want to get a head start on the gardening season, you can combine the foldable raised bed with the matching GREEN HOUSE grow tent. This turns the planter into a small cold frame for your balcony or terrace. The grow tent is ideal for sowing seeds, pre-cultivating seedlings and hardening off young plants. Herbs, lettuces, tomatoes, chillies, vegetables or summer flowers can be grown directly in the raised bed before being transferred or moved on later.

This makes the foldable raised bed particularly appealing for anyone who doesn’t just want to buy ready-grown plants, but would prefer to grow their own from seed.

Robinia wood or aluminium: two materials, one standard.

Urbanature offers this foldable raised bed in two high-quality material options. Both are designed for use on balconies and patios, but differ in terms of appearance, feel and intended use.

Folding raised bed made of robinia wood

Robinia is one of the most durable European woods for outdoor use. The wood is hard, robust and naturally highly weather-resistant. It is therefore particularly suitable for those looking for a natural material with a warm appearance. The Robinia option is ideal for balconies and terraces featuring wood, natural stone, plants and a cosy design. It looks light, natural and high-quality – without resembling a typical DIY store raised bed. Black locust is the right choice if you want your raised bed to blend into a natural balcony setting.

Foldable raised bed made of anodised aluminium

The aluminium version is the premium model for particularly demanding locations. Anodised aluminium is weather-resistant, dimensionally stable and durable. The surface is not a coat of paint that can flake off, but a finish applied to the material itself.

This makes the aluminium raised bed particularly suitable for balconies exposed to harsh weather conditions, modern architecture, roof terraces and minimalist outdoor spaces. It has a technical, clean-lined and highly durable appearance. Aluminium is the right choice when maximum weather resistance, a minimalist design and a particularly high-quality finish are the main priorities.

High quality rather than short-lived.

Many raised beds for the balcony are designed to last just one season. Thin wood, simple plastic sheeting, flimsy plastic parts or wobbly metal frames may look serviceable at first, but they quickly lose their stability and appeal.

Urbanature’s foldable raised bed takes a different approach. It is designed as a durable planting system – made from high-quality materials, with replaceable components and a design that is intended to still fit on the balcony even after several years.

The planters are made from weather-resistant ASA/ABS plastic for outdoor use. They are manufactured in the Urbanature workshop. Spare parts are available for Urbanature products. That is the difference between a simple plant stand and a well-designed raised bed designed for long-term use.

Which plants are suitable for the fold-away raised bed?

The fold-away raised bed is suitable for many plants that can be grown on balconies and patios:

  • Kitchen herbs such as basil, parsley, chives, mint, thyme and rosemary
  • Salads, leaf lettuce, rocket and spinach
  • Strawberries and edible flowers
  • Chillies, peppers and compact tomato varieties
  • Young plants and growing from seed
  • Summer flowers and bee-friendly flowering plants
  • Mixed plantings for small balcony gardens

The vertical layout allows you to combine different plants across several levels. Whether it’s a herb garden, a balcony garden for snacking, a small vegetable patch or a decorative flowerbed – the system remains flexible.

Can be folded away at the end of the season.

A good balcony product shouldn’t just be useful in summer. It needs to remain practical even once the season is over. The foldable raised bed can be folded away in just a few simple steps. This means it takes up significantly less space when stored and can be kept over the winter in the cellar, a storage room, a conservatory or, if sheltered, on the balcony. This flexibility is particularly important on small balconies.

Which raised bed is right for you?

Choose black locust wood if you’re looking for a natural, warm material and your balcony has a cosy, homely feel. Choose aluminium if you’re looking for a particularly durable, premium raised bed suitable for harsh weather conditions, modern architecture or a clean, minimalist look. Choose the Basic version if you want a classic setup with drainage and an overflow. Choose the Hydro version if you’d prefer the convenience of watering ‘from below’, complete with a water level indicator. Add the growing cover if you want to get a head start on the season and grow young plants directly in the raised bed.

Difference from a vertical garden.

The foldable raised bed is a compact solution featuring 8-litre plant pots and an optional grow cover. It is particularly suitable for deep-rooted plants, herbs, vegetables, young plants and flexible planting arrangements within a square footprint. The vertical garden from Urbanature is slightly larger and uses rectangular 10-litre containers. It is particularly suitable when the focus is on greater planting capacity, balcony greening or a green privacy screen.

Basically: The fold-out raised bed is ideal for growing seedlings, herbs and vegetables on a square footprint with wider spacing between the planters. The vertical garden is ideal for a rectangular footprint and for planting as a privacy screen. The planter volume and water reservoir are slightly larger.

Frequently asked questions about the fold-away raised bed.

Is the raised bed suitable for small balconies?

Yes. The raised bed has been specially designed for small balconies, terraces and urban living spaces. It makes use of vertical space rather than taking up a lot of floor space. What’s more, the container’s capacity is well suited to most uses.

What is the advantage over a standard raised bed?

A traditional raised bed requires a lot of soil, is heavy and takes up more space. The foldable raised bed uses individual 8-litre plant pots, making it lighter, more flexible and better suited to balconies.

Which is better: black locust wood or aluminium?

Black locust wood is natural, warm and very durable when used outdoors. Aluminium is particularly weather-resistant, modern and the premium choice for locations exposed to harsh weather conditions.

Can I grow vegetables in a raised bed?

Yes. The raised bed is suitable for herbs, lettuces, strawberries, chillies, compact vegetable varieties, young plants and mixed plantings.

Is there a self-watering system?

Yes. The Hydro version features an irrigation system with a water reservoir. It includes drainage grids with a filter fleece, watering corners, a suction basket and a water level indicator, as well as a self-locking plug. The system is also available as a retrofit kit.

Can I use the raised bed for growing plants?

Yes. With the right GREEN HOUSE grow tent, a plant pot can be used as a small cold frame. You can also protect your herbs from the first cold nights in autumn.

Can the raised bed be stored away?

Yes. At the end of the season, the raised bed can be folded up and stored away to save space.
