Suitable plants

Houseplants that can be reliably grown using hydroponics and that can cope with the lighting conditions in the room in question are particularly suitable.

For less bright locations

For a lush living wall

Combine compact, upright-growing plants with climbing or trailing varieties. This means that the plant tubes become increasingly covered by the leaves, creating a dense, natural-looking green wall. Direct, intense midday sun should be avoided for many houseplants. The individual location requirements of the chosen plants are always the deciding factor.

Using aquatic plants

Plants already accustomed to hydroponics can be placed directly into the mesh pots. A structurally stable mineral substrate such as expanded clay is suitable for supporting the roots. Layers (layers taken from a parent plant grown in soil) can also be rooted in water first and then carefully transferred to the mesh pots. The water roots they have already formed make the transition to the hydroponic system easier. Soil-grown plants should not be placed directly into the planting tubes whilst still covered in heavily caked-on potting compost. We recommend transitioning soil roots to water roots using small plants. It is best to start with small, young shoots from a mother plant and allow them to develop water roots in a glass of water.

Watering and Fertilising

The planting tubes are filled manually with water (max. 2.5 litres). The water level is checked regularly. Fresh water is only added once a large proportion of the supply has been used up. A suitable hydroponic fertiliser is used to provide nutrients. The dosage and fertilisation intervals depend on the product used and the plants’ requirements.

Cleaner than traditional planting in soil

As the HÄNGEGARTEN is planted without traditional potting compost, it requires significantly less maintenance. There is no need to replace the potting compost, nor is regular repotting necessary. Typical problems associated with soil-based houseplants, such as the occurrence of fungus gnats, can also be significantly reduced. However, hydroponics is not a completely maintenance-free system. Water levels, nutrient supply, root health and plant development should be checked regularly. Once a year, the plant tubes should be cleaned and any dead root debris removed. It is also advisable to prune the plants.

The system is not intended for use in unprotected outdoor areas subject to continuous direct exposure to the elements.

Wall mounting

The HÄNGEGARTEN is mounted on the wall using four fixing points. The wall must be able to support the weight of the fully loaded system. As wall structures vary considerably, only standard wood screws and wall plugs for solid walls are supplied. We also offer separate fixing materials for plasterboard walls as optional accessories. The fixing materials must be selected to suit the wall material, substrate and total weight. In the case of plasterboard, lightweight walls, porous masonry or where the wall structure is unclear, the installation should be planned and carried out by a qualified professional.

The following should be taken into account:

• Nature and load-bearing capacity of the wall
• Dead weight of the plant tube + approximately 2.5 kg of water per fully filled tube
• Weight and volume of the plants
• Number of plant tubes installed
• Site conditions for the indoor plants

Custom cable lengths

The standard cable length is 230 cm. For rooms with unusual ceiling heights or a bespoke layout, the stainless steel cables can be made to a different length on request.
